Can I connect my new blue ray player to my current Home DVD Theater Speakers?

I have a Panasonic SA-PT960 DVD Home Theater System and it works great on my Samsung LN52A650 LCD. I want to buy my first blue ray player, but I want to make sure that I can use my speakers for its audio. All my speakers and subwoofer have to be connected to the DVD player/receiver,, so if i Can use the blue ray player, how can I properly connect it? Someone at best buy told me, that I can keep my current set up, and just connect the blue ray to my TV via HDMI and then use optical audio cable from my Panasonic Player to the blue ray,, still not sure if that will work.. any sugestions?
After reading the second answer, I am wondering now,, beacause most players out there blue ray or not only have optical output,, so do i need blue ray to have optical output and my dvd player/receiver optical input? or vice versa ?? sorry I dont know much about this
