Subwoofer, need to hook up speaker wire too?

I just set up my home theatre 5:1 system and the speakers play but the subwoofer doesn’t seem to be doing anything. Do I need to hook up speaker wire to it, too? Or just the cable it came with? The test didn’t make it make noise either. Also, my tv had sound during a movie, but not regular tv?
OK, got my TV sound working. I shut everything off and then back on and it must have detected a setting? Anyway, I tried a music CD in the DVD player to see if my subwoofer would pound, and I couldn’t tell if it was working even with my ear pressed to it…some very light sound like base, but not much. Any ideas? Did I not turn my receiver up lound enough? The woofer was up half way. Thank you.
